Traditional Ruler Accused of Land Encroachment Sparks Community Discord in Edo State

In Edo State, a dispute has emerged between HRH Theophilus Osobase II, the Onojie of Egoro in Esan West Local Government Area, and some of his subjects. Allegations surfaced that the traditional ruler took over land and destroyed commercial crops belonging to certain members of his community, triggering tension among the locals.

The aggrieved community members, represented by A. O. O. Ekpu & Co in a petition to the Edo State Commissioner of Police dated December 27, 2023, accused the Onojie and 11 others of deliberate and destructive actions against their plantations.

They alleged that the destruction of oil palm trees and other crops was orchestrated by the traditional ruler, causing fear among the people and compromising their livelihoods. Consequently, the police summoned Osobase and the others involved to appear before them on January 9 to address the allegations.

Reportedly, some elders of the community expressed support for Osobase's ascension to the throne following his father's passing in 1992, four months before his birth. However, when approached, Osobase vehemently refuted the accusations. He clarified that his discord was with an individual, not the elders or the community at large.

Osobase, visibly upset with media reports, defended himself, questioning the notion of stealing from himself, as the land belonged to him as the Onojie of Egoro. He affirmed his intention to honor the police summons and emphasized his commitment to facing the matter directly, denying any intention of evading responsibility.

In his own words, "I am the Onojie of Egoro, responsible for both the people and the territory. Disputes with one individual do not signify a conflict with the entire community.

I cannot shirk my responsibility. I will be in Benin City to address the police invitation, as I cannot run from my people or my throne."
