Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, conducted the oath-taking ceremony for Simon Bako Lalong, the former Minister of Labour and Employment, appointing him as the new Senator for Plateau South.

Lalong, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), assumed office on Wednesday at 11:56 am, stepping in for Senator Napoleon Binkap Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was removed by the Appeal Court.

Before his swearing-in on Wednesday, Lalong visited the National Assembly on Tuesday to present his Certificate of Return and pertinent documents to the Clerk of the Senate.

During this visit, he held discussions with Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin, former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Senator Diket Plang representing Plateau Central District, and other Senators.

Addressing reporters after taking the oath, the newly inducted Senator assured his constituents that he would uphold their trust, emphasizing his commitment to serving the people.

Lalong expressed his preference for Senate representation, resigning from his ministerial post and citing his readiness to contribute to the progress of Plateau South Senatorial District.

In a resignation letter submitted to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday, Lalong highlighted the Court of Appeal's decision affirming his victory in the Plateau South Senatorial District election and the subsequent directive to INEC to issue him the Certificate of Return.

He conveyed his appreciation for the confidence placed in him by President Tinubu but stressed his decision to assume the role of Senator to further advance the government's agenda and democratic growth.
