Rivers State House of Assembly Withdraws Impeachment Notice against Governor Siminalayi Fubara

By Gloria Ogbonna

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have retracted the impeachment notice previously issued to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The assembly convened in Port Harcourt for official sessions, focusing primarily on the withdrawal of the impeachment notice against Fubara during their deliberations.

This decision came following a mediation meeting at the Aso Villa in Abuja between President Bola Tinubu and the conflicting parties. The lawmakers, announcing their withdrawal in a notice read on the house floor, cited respect for the President as the motive behind their action.

The discord between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, caused a split among the lawmakers in the House. Subsequently, 27 members defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress amid the turmoil.

The feud led to various events, including parallel sittings, an uncovered impeachment plot against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a series of resignations among pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet.
