Contrasting Views on President Tinubu's Mediation in Rivers State Tension

By Gloria Ogbonna

Chief Olorunfunmi Basorun, a former Lagos State Government Secretary and lawyer, defended President Bola Tinubu's involvement in resolving the conflict between the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Basorun asserted that Tinubu, as the nation's figurative father, rightfully intervened within constitutional bounds and addressed issues affecting peace and security in the country.

Contrarily, rights activist Femi Falana and elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark criticized Tinubu's intervention, branding it unconstitutional and asserting that it exceeded presidential authority. Falana highlighted the legal implications of legislators defecting from their parties and the constitutional parameters for retaining their seats.

Basorun countered Falana's stance, defending the lawmakers' actions, citing party disputes and the demolition of the House of Assembly, implying that such turmoil justified their defection. He also criticized Clark for what he deemed an approach clouded by ethnicity and urged a reconsideration of opinions based on Rivers State's situation.

Additionally, Basorun called for an apology from Falana for suggesting that Tinubu was intruding in Rivers State affairs and welcomed the prospect of debating Falana on the matter's constitutional aspects.
