Saraki, others stoned at Eid praying ground in Ilorin Dr. Bukola Saraki

The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar
Bukola Saraki, was on Thursday stoned by
angry worshipers at the Yidi Ground, Ilorin, the
Kwara State capital.
Saraki was stoned alongside other dignitaries
during the special Eid-el-Kabir prayers held in
the ancient town, with some vehicles
destroyed.
Sources said the anger was over the unpaid
salaries of the state’s civil servants.
The state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed,
had during the week directed that civil
servants, especially those at the local
government level, should be paid their
salaries.
Ahmed said loans should be sourced from
banks for the salary.
Kwara State, like so many other states of the
Federation, have been unable to meet their
financial obligations to workers owing to
dwindling allocation from the Federal
Government.
However, some equally alleged that the
worshippers were still protesting the alleged
sale of a large portion of the praying ground
by Saraki.
It was learnt that indigenes of Ilorin based in
Abuja had expressed anger at the Senate
president when he showed up after his
election to pray alongside President
Muhammadu Buhari at the National Mosque
in Abuja.
Some of them, it was learnt, had vowed to
“show him” their other side when they gather
for the Eid prayers.
The alleged sale of the praying ground had
been an issue over the years.
Among those at the praying ground when the
attack took place were the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji
Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari; former Minister of
Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi; the Speaker
of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Hon.
Ali Ahmad; member of the House of
Representatives, Hon. Razak Atunwa; and a
former National Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu
Baraje.
